And Out the Door I Went

When you need to Evacuate

  • What do you do if you leave by car but then have to walk?
  • Does the whole family have a plan?
  • What if you are on vacation?
  • What if some family members are in a different location?
    • Work, school, appointment at the dentist
  • What is your Alamo destination?
    • Is the family clear on that?
    • Can they get there?

The First 24 Hours

This is the most critical time for you and the family. It will be the most unsettled, with unclear, shifting information and conditions.

  • Most serious injuries will occur at the time of the incident or close to it.
  • Events can escalate, and one problem becomes multiple problems.
  • Injuries become apparent as adrenaline wears off
    • Bleeding – Symptoms and Control
    • Bumps become concussions
    • Severity becomes apparent
    • Eating will be different.
  • Psychological Impact is most significant.
    • Awareness of this is crucial to prevent it from being debilitating.
  • While an evacuation is one problem, an Earthquake leads to fires, outages, congested roadways, and poor communication.
    • The extent of the Fire or Earthquake can grow – aftershocks and secondary fires.
